Paul Edme Le Rat, 1888, Engraving of Doge Leonardo Loredan after Joannes Bellinus

This is an engraving by Paul Edme Le Rat, published in 1888, of Leonardo Loredan, Doge of Venice head and shoulders, in hat, coats of arms below, after Giovanni Bellini.

Leonardo Loredan was the Doge of Venice from 1501-21. In this engraving he is shown wearing his robes of state, the hat and ornate buttons being part of the official wardrobe. Called a 'corno', the shape of the hat comes from the hood of a doublet and was worn over a linen cap. Venice had a tradition of painting formal portraits of its rulers dressed in state robes and this work is painted in the style of the sculpted portrait busts popular at the time, often inspired by Roman sculpture. Bellini signed his name in its Latin form on the cartellino, or 'small paper', on the parapet.

Paul Edme LeRat (1849-1892) was born in Paris and studied under Lecoq de Boisbaldran and L. Gaucherel. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1869 and died in Paris in 1892. His works are included in many museums and libraries.

Giovanni Bellini was born into the leading dynasty of Venetian painters and seems to have been the younger brother of Gentile Bellini. His development was shaped by his father, Jacopo and his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna also influenced early works, such as 'The Blood of the Redeemer' and 'The Agony in the Garden'. Bellini was one of the most influential Venetian artists, living and working in Venice all his life, his career spanned 65 years. He is celebrated for his pioneering portrayal of natural light, seen in such works as 'The Agony in the Garden', for his tender and graceful pictures of the Virgin and for his altarpieces. Durer, in Venice about 1506, wrote that Giovanni 'is very old and yet he is the best painter of all'.

The print is framed and glazed.
